JMP.chat is a free and open-source VoIP service: for unknown per month you get a US or Canadian phone number that is yours to keep. Instead of a web dashboard, JMP runs over XMPP/Jabber — messages and calls arrive in a Jabber app such as Cheogram on Android, iOS or the web. The number can send and receive text and picture messages, make and receive calls, forward calls, and take voicemails delivered as audio recordings with text transcriptions.
The subscription is billed from a prepaid balance that can be topped up from 15.00 USD, by credit card or with the crypto-currencies Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Monero (XMR). No identity verification is required: JMP states it does not collect or store personal data it does not need.
You can port an existing US or Canadian number in, or port your JMP number out at any time. The subscription can be cancelled by contacting support via Jabber chat or SMS; after cancellation the number is reclaimed unless it is ported to another carrier. Note that JMP is for personal use only — automations, marketing and campaigns are not allowed, and there is no API.
